Calibrew is a dial-in coach and a brew log for home coffee. Tell it how the last cup tasted; it changes one thing for the next one.

How it works

Set up your gear once. The coach reads it: a bean-to-cup machine gets grind, strength and cup size; a lever gets the kettle and the pull; a pressurised basket gets the dose, because the basket hides the grind.
Add your coffee. Type its name or scan the label. When the name says where it grew, About this coffee tells you the region, process and variety — and what they change on your gear.
Log a brew, then tap how it tasted — two taps, sour/balanced/bitter and thin/full/heavy.
One change comes back. Never two. If the grind has had its turn and the taste has not moved, the coach goes to the next lever it knows your machine has.
The bag's gauge fills as you go, and closes when a cup lands balanced and full. That recipe is then kept for the bag.

Common questions

Does it connect to my Bluetooth scale? Not yet. Read the weight off the scale and type it in.

Why does it say my beans are too fresh? Freshly roasted coffee is full of gas that pushes the water around, so it tastes sour whatever the grind does. How long it needs depends on the roast — for espresso about 3 days for a dark roast, 5 for a medium and 7 for a light, a little longer for naturals. The coach says so instead of sending you chasing the grind.

Why didn't it read my bag's label? It keeps only the lines it reads clearly, usually the coffee's name and the roaster. Hold the front of the bag flat, in good light, or pick a photo instead. Nothing is filled in until you tap it.

Which languages does it speak? English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean and Turkish. It follows your iPhone's language; to change it for Calibrew only, find Calibrew in the Settings app and choose its Language.

Can I use it for filter, AeroPress or moka? Filter and immersion have their own dial-in loops. Moka, capsule and Turkish coffee get a troubleshooter instead of a loop, because there is nothing on them worth dialling.
